UK government pressures Apple for iCloud backdoor access. Apple warns against stricter tech regulations.
The UK's Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) has filed a legal document indicating that the UK government's request to Apple for an iCloud backdoor extends beyond what was previously known. The order requires Apple to provide access to standard iCloud services used by millions of users, not just Advanced Data Protection encryption. This revelation comes after the US government claimed the UK had agreed to drop its demand for access to American citizens' data. Apple is challenging the order and has withdrawn ADP from UK customers. The case will be heard in early next year by the IPT, an independent body investigating complaints of unlawful surveillance. Apple has emphasized its commitment to user data security and refusal to create backdoors. Additionally, Apple has criticized proposed UK competition watchdog rules that aim to increase market competition, warning they could lead to delays in product features and enhancements.
